After-Treatment FAQs
Congratulations on completing your endodontic treatment! Now that the root canal system of your tooth has been permanently sealed, you may have some questions about what to expect next. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers to help guide you through the post-treatment period:
What should I expect after my endodontic treatment?
After your endodontic treatment is completed, the outer surface of your tooth will be sealed with a temporary restoration. It is essential to follow up with your restorative dentist to have a permanent restoration placed. This final restoration is crucial for protecting your tooth against fracture and decay. Your restorative dentist will also receive a complete report of your treatment. Additionally, a follow-up examination will be scheduled to evaluate the healing progress, typically occurring within the following month.
Is my tooth more prone to fracture after endodontic treatment?
Yes, your tooth is more susceptible to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. It's recommended to avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your restorative dentist has placed a core build-up and a protective restoration, usually a crown. If your tooth's strength is significantly compromised, your restorative dentist or endodontist may also place a post and core build-up inside the tooth to reinforce it.
Are there any potential problems after treatment?
Lower teeth and nerve injury: There is a slight possibility of nerve injury during root canal surgery, particularly for lower posterior teeth. Your endodontist will assess this risk before treatment and take measures to minimize it. In rare cases, irritation or damage to the nerve may occur, leading to tingling, altered sensation, or temporary loss of feeling in the affected tissues. These symptoms usually resolve over time, but they may be permanent in rare instances.
Upper teeth and sinus communication: Root canal surgery on upper teeth can occasionally result in communication between your mouth and the adjacent sinus. If this occurs, it typically heals on its own, but special instructions may be provided. For a few days after surgery, it's essential to avoid creating pressure in the sinus area, such as by blowing your nose.
Post-operative infections: While uncommon, post-operative infections may occur following endodontic treatment. A simple office visit and examination are usually sufficient to address the infection. Antibiotics may be prescribed for a week to resolve the infection, and additional follow-up procedures may be necessary in rare instances.
