Before Endodontic Treatment
Before undergoing endodontic treatment, it's essential to prepare yourself adequately to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. Here are some important guidelines to follow prior to your appointment:
Anesthesia and Recovery: The procedure will be performed under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort during the treatment. Following the procedure, there are typically no restrictions on activities such as driving or returning to work or school. You can resume normal eating and drinking once the effects of the anesthesia have worn off.
Medication Management: Continue taking all prescribed medications for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, or any other health concerns as advised by your physician. If you have any doubts or questions regarding your medications, don't hesitate to contact our office before your appointment.
Preparation for Specific Conditions: If you have been instructed by your physician or referring dentist to use antibiotic premedication due to certain conditions like mitral valve prolapse (MVP), heart murmurs, or joint prosthesis, ensure you are on the appropriate antibiotics on the day of your appointment. This is particularly crucial for individuals with a history of rheumatic heart disease.
Dietary Considerations: It's recommended to have a full breakfast or lunch before your appointment, depending on the timing. This will help ensure you have adequate energy and stamina during the procedure.
Pain Management: Do not take pain medication if you can tolerate it for 6 hours before the procedure. If you can tolerate them, taking ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) before the procedure can help reduce inflammation and discomfort. We suggest taking 800mg of ibuprofen or 500mg of naproxen sodium approximately an hour before the endodontic therapy. This same NSAID regimen is also recommended before any non-surgical dental procedures in your referring dentist’s office.
By adhering to these instructions, you can help optimize your comfort and the success of your endodontic treatment. If you have any further queries or concerns, feel free to reach out to our office for clarification. We look forward to providing you with excellent care during your visit.
