General Instructions

Following a Root Canal Procedure

Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may experience tenderness for several days following the root canal treatment. This tenderness is normal and should not be alarming. Below are some home care instructions to follow after your root canal procedure:

  • The treated tooth may be very tender to touch, biting, tapping, or chewing. Avoid chewing on that side to minimize discomfort. Although the discomfort typically subsides within a few days, it may persist for a few months, with gradual improvement over time.

  • After your root canal procedure, your endodontist will usually place a temporary filling in the tooth. Be cautious, as temporary filling material may loosen with pressure and chewing. It's advisable to chew on the opposite side until you can visit us again for the final restoration. Your general dentist will do a permanent filling.

  • Refrain from chewing hard, sticky, or chewy foods until the placement of the final restoration.

  • Expect soreness and tenderness in the treated tooth, injection sites, and surrounding soft tissues. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon salt to 8 oz. of warm water) three to four times a day may help alleviate discomfort. Maintain an elevated head position, even while lying down, and avoid strenuous activities.

  • It's typically recommended to take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or aspirin for three to five days following treatment. If anti-inflammatory medication isn't suitable for you, opt for extra-strength acetaminophen (Tylenol). If pain persists despite medication, contact the office for further guidance.

  • Ensure you take all prescribed medications as directed.

  • Applying ice to the jaw joints or muscles can help alleviate discomfort.

  • If you initially feel better but experience significant worsening of symptoms two or three days later, you may be experiencing a "flare-up," an uncommon but not unusual occurrence. Contact our office if you suspect a flare-up.

  • There's typically no specific waiting period, but we advise ensuring your symptoms have subsided before proceeding with the restoration. Aim to have the tooth restored within a week or two of the root canal treatment to prevent further weakening or tooth loss unless instructed otherwise.

  • Your endodontist may request a follow-up evaluation after treatment to assess the outcome, ensure normal tooth function, and evaluate bone healing. You'll be informed if a follow-up visit is necessary.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact our office for assistance.

Following an Apicoectomy

Following your apicoectomy (endodontic surgery), it's common for your tooth and surrounding gum tissue to experience slight tenderness for several days due to manipulation during the treatment and the prior condition of your tooth. This tenderness is typically normal and should not cause concern. Here are some home care instructions to follow:

  • Avoid lifting or pulling on your lips to prevent tearing out of the sutures.

  • Expect some swelling and discoloration, which will gradually diminish over time.

  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the face over the operated area. Apply the pack for 20 minutes, then remove it for 10 minutes, repeating this process only during the first day.

  • Starting from the day after the surgery, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon to 8 oz. of warm water) as frequently as possible for one week.

  • Choose nourishing foods that require minimal chewing for the first few days, such as eggs, soups, and milkshakes.

  • It's normal to experience slight bleeding, pain, or swelling during the initial days following the surgery.

  • Brush your teeth carefully, paying special attention to the operated area. Mouthwash can also be used.

  • For pain relief, ibuprofen is recommended. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding medication usage.

  • If you experience an elevated temperature, excessive bleeding, swelling, or uncontrolled discomfort, contact the office promptly.

  • A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to remove sutures, and additional follow-up visits may be necessary.

  • We typically conduct a follow-up examination at least six months after the treatment to assess the outcome, ensure normal tooth function, and determine bone healing.

Following Dental Implant Surgery

Following implant surgery, it's crucial to allow the surgical site to heal properly. Avoid touching or disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers to facilitate the healing process. Applying ice packs to the outside of your face during the first 24 hours after surgery can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Take any prescribed medications as directed by your dentist to manage pain and prevent infection, and consider using over-the-counter pain relievers as needed, following the recommended dosage.

To minimize pressure on the implant site, stick to a soft diet for the first few days post-surgery and avoid hot foods and beverages. While maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently, be cautious around the surgical area to avoid disrupting the healing process. A mild saltwater rinse may be recommended by your dentist to keep the surgical site clean and promote healing. Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor healing progress and ensure the implant integrates properly with your jawbone. Report any unusual symptoms, such as excessive bleeding, persistent pain, or signs of infection, promptly for further evaluation and guidance.
